Burlap Initial Plaque

HERE IS My Burlap Initial Plaque~

I went thrifting this past Thurs. and found this WOOD plaque.. for $1.50.. its real heavy duty nice un-finished wood. The letter "L" I bought un-finished at a craft store earlier this year. I made it for spring, but now that my spring stuff is put away... it didn't go with anything. So I created something else with it.....
I took the letter "L" and layed it down on the back of my damask paper, then I traced the letter, cut out the letter, and mod podged the paper onto the letter.
I cut out a semi messy square piece of burlap. I then layed it inside the plaque, held it tight to the sides and gently traced the outline of the plaque with a pencil.
Once I traced the burlap I cut it out, and mod podged the burlap on. However, I did paint my plaque/wood first. Then I mod podge the burlap on. I did a coat of modpodge underneath the burlap and one over the burlap.
after I painted the plaque "Wicker White" acrylic paint, I then did a shabby glaze. Its just brown and black acrylic paint mixed with some water. You wipe it on the wood with a paper towel and then wipe some off. LOVE the shabby aged look.
I dug out my stash of buttons, and played around with them until I liked the color choices, grouping, and the size of the buttons. Then I just used my glue gun and hot glued them on.
I tied a small strip around the top of the L, and hot glued a small white button to the center.
VIOLA~ I HEART IT! ;)
AND IT sits on my entry table to greet guests..... I HAVE to say this is my most fav. thing I have made, and I am so delighted with it. SQUEAL!!!

This is very cute. We need more G's around our house. All we have is a door mat on our front porch.

I'm new to crafting and I'm wondering if you could give me more detailed instructions on how to get the "shabby" paint effect.
